BAKE FOR QUAKE: Lucy Lightfoot and Tessa Finnigan want to help their peers in Canterbury.
WHILE the teachers are away, the students will bake. Wellington East Girls’ College pupils were out in Cuba Mall this afternoon raising money for Canterbury quake relief efforts.
School council prefects Tessa Finnigan and Lucy Lightfoot were in charge of the fundraiser which was drawing in passers-by with their home baked goods.
Sales raised a total of $770, said Tessa in an email late this afternoon.
The project appealed as it “gives the community an idea of what we are like”, she says.
“It also raises the profile of the school and council reps and shows how we get out and help.”
But it wasn’t a last-minute idea. The prefects had planned the fundraiser with the help of their charity council.
Both groups’ members baked cupcakes, muffins and slices and the charity council delivered fresh goods throughout the day.
Lucy says the college has two sister Christchurch schools which need help after the September 4 earthquake that has disrupted life in Canterbury.
The schools, Avonside Girls’ High and Christchurch Girls’ High School, reopened yesterday to both pupils and teachers.
Wellington East Girls’ College will also be hosting a mufti day tomorrow to raise more money for the cause.
